Haneda airport is approximately 370 km away from Sendai. Tohoku Shinkansen can be taken from the Tokyo Central Station, which can be accessed by:
Keikyu Line 11-18 min. to the Shinagawa Station by Keikyu Line (access map to the station and timetable). From the Shinagawa Station, either Yamanote (green), Keihin-Tohoku (blue) or Tokaido (amber) Line takes 25 min. to the Tokyo Central Station (access map to the station and timetable).
Monorail 18-22 min. to the Hamamatsucho Station by Tokyo Monorail (access map to the station and timetable). You can purchase (using your preordered ticket) a Japan Rail (JR) Pass at the JR Travel Service Center at either the Service Center at the station.
From the Hamamatsucho Station, either Yamanote (green) or Keihin-Tohoku (blue) Line takes 7 min. to the Tokyo Central Station (access map to the station and timetable).
Narita airport is approximately 340 km away from Sendai. Tohoku Shinkansen can be taken from either Ueno or Tokyo Central Station, which can be accessed by:
Keisei Skyliner 43-51 min. to the Keisei Ueno Station by Keisei Skyliner (access map to the station and timetable). From the Keisei Ueno Station, it takes about 5-10 min. to the JR Ueno Station (access map to the station and timetable), where the Tohoku Shinkansen will depart to Sendai.
JR Narita Express 18-22 min. to the Tokyo Central Station by JR Narita Express (access map to the station and timetable), where the Tohoku Shinkansen will depart to Sendai. You can purchase (using your preordered ticket) a Japan Rail (JR) Pass at the JR Travel Service Center at either Narita Airport (Terminal 1) or Narita Airport Terminal 2-3 Station.
Bus 60 min. to the Tokyo Central Station by JR Narita Express (access map to the station and timetable), where the Tohoku Shinkansen will depart to Sendai.
It takes about 1.5 hours from either Tokyo or Ueno station to the Sendai station by Tohoku Shinkansen (bullet train) operated by East Japan Railway (JR East).
From the Sendai station, it takes about 5-10 minutes by taxi from the taxi rank on the ground floor just outside the station or about 20 min. on foot. Please refer to a local map.
It is easily accessible (about 30 min.) from the Sendai Miyagi Interchange of the Tohoku Expressway. You can purchase an Expressway Pass if you plan to travel in the Tohoku Region. You need to ask for a temporary parking permit to the security at the entrance of the campus.

By about 1 hour from Sendai by train/car, you can visit Matsushima, where is known as one of the "Three Most Scenic Spots of Japan" Many islands can be seen in the Matsushima Bay with several beautiful temples and more. Please find more details here. Between Matsushima and Sendai, you can also visit Shiogama by train/car/boat, where you can find Shiogama Shrine.
If you have more time, you may wish to go to Hiraizumi, a World Herritage. It was the regional capital created by the Northern Fujiwaras almost 1,000 years ago. They founded several temples, including the Gold Pagoda, to realise Paradise Land believed in Buddism.
